 Face Rigging "arFace"

 While working on my personal project,  I developed a character face rigging system "arFace" written with python. The facial rig is a joint based rig and corrective shapes driven by the joints. The rig provides different layers of controls on specific areas to allow an extra level of deformation control. All the work was done using Maya and Python.

Jack Nicolson is one of my favorite actors. It is always fun to watch his performance which display the complex layers of often-conflicting emotions, and it is something really hard to achieve in animation.

I tried to replicate one of his fine performance to study and realized it is impossible to achieve the same level of emotional intensity with realistic setup. My rigging already has a lot more range of motion than the realistic one, but I had to add the functionality to dial up the ranges for each part of the face followed by fine-tuning the corrective blendshapes.

Cartoon Facial Rigging

The characters with small eyes are not the greatest model to make an animation where the eyes plays such important part. I'd like to challenge that. So here I modeled and rigged the Asian character to show the possibility. Apparently, I needed to dial up the scalability of the eyes to achieve cartoon style. Also, I was realizing how tough it is to animate on emotions. Despite the struggle, I had a blast animating it. I even got a little carried away creating 40 animated stickers.
